EOFY Review and Looking Ahead: Seeing Progress at the End of the Financial Year

What happens when a long-term client sits down, looks back at the year, and realises just how far they have come?

End of financial year is a funny time. For most people, it means a mad scramble for receipts, a very long queue at the accountant, and at least one moment of panic wondering if that home office claim is really going to hold up. But for Sandra, 61, it looked a little different this year.

Sandra sat down for her annual EOFY review with her adviser at Vostro and, somewhere between the numbers and the forward projections, she had a moment she did not entirely expect. She felt proud.

Meet Sandra

Age 61  |  Vostro client for 9 years  |  Semi-retired teacher

Sandra came to Vostro in her early fifties, feeling like she had left her retirement planning "a little late." She had some super, a modest investment portfolio, and a lot of questions. Nine years later, she has something she did not have when she walked in: a plan she actually understands and believes in.

The starting point: more questions than answers

When Sandra first came to Vostro, she was not in a bad position financially. But she felt completely in the dark. Her super was sitting in a default fund she had not looked at in years, she had a small share portfolio she had inherited and never touched, and she had a vague, slightly anxious sense that retirement was closer than she was ready for.

Sound familiar? For a lot of Australians, the path to good financial health does not start with a crisis. It starts with a quiet, uncomfortable feeling that things could be better organised.

Sandra did not need someone to rescue her finances. She needed someone to help her understand them, and then help her make the most of them.

Building the plan: small steps, big picture

The early years of Sandra's relationship with Vostro were about laying foundations. Consolidating super. Reviewing insurance cover. Setting clear, measurable goals for the decade ahead. And perhaps most importantly, establishing a rhythm of regular reviews so that Sandra was never left wondering what was happening with her money.

Year 1: Getting the foundations right

Consolidated super, reviewed insurance, and set a clear retirement income target. For the first time, Sandra had a number to work toward.

Years 2 to 5: Building momentum

Regular contributions, a diversified investment strategy, and annual reviews kept Sandra on track. The inherited share portfolio was restructured to better suit her goals and risk profile.

Years 6 to 8: Transition planning

As retirement drew closer, the focus shifted to transition to retirement strategies, contribution caps, and planning for what Sandra's income would actually look like in retirement.

This year: The EOFY moment

Sandra reduced her teaching hours, her super passed a milestone she had set years earlier, and her portfolio was performing in line with her long-term projections. At her EOFY review, the numbers finally told the story she had been working toward.

The review: more than just numbers

Sandra's EOFY review was not just a spreadsheet exercise. It was a chance to look back at the year honestly, measure progress against her benchmarks, and make sure the plan still reflected where she was headed.

Her super had grown consistently. Her insurance cover had been reviewed and right-sized now that her mortgage was cleared. Her investment portfolio had been rebalanced to reflect her shifting risk appetite as retirement approached. And for the first time, Sandra could see a clear, realistic picture of what her retirement income would look like.

The greatest thing about a regular review is not what it tells you about your money. It is what it tells you about your progress. And sometimes, progress is exactly what you need to see.

Entering the new financial year with confidence

Sandra walked out of her EOFY review with something that is genuinely hard to put a dollar value on: confidence. Not the reckless kind, but the quiet, grounded kind that comes from knowing her plan is solid and she is on track.

She has a clear picture of her retirement timeline and what the years ahead look like. She is not anxious about the new financial year. She is ready for it.

How Vostro helped Sandra

  • Set clear, measurable financial benchmarks from the very first meeting
  • Conducted annual EOFY reviews to track progress and adjust the plan
  • Restructured her investment portfolio to better align with her goals and risk profile
  • Managed her super contributions strategically as the caps changed over the years
  • Reviewed and right-sized her insurance cover at each stage of life
  • Guided her through a transition to retirement strategy as semi-retirement approached

Could this be you?

Sandra's story is not unusual. In fact, it is one we see regularly at Vostro. People who come to us feeling uncertain, a little behind, or just unsure where to start, and who, with time and a commitment to regular reviews, end up exactly where they hoped to be.
